Description
Stone wig model consisting of at least six pieces which were carved separately and then joined together. It is believed that this model hairpiece may have been attached to a large anthropomorphic xoanon made of perishable materials (wood or plaster?) which have not been preserved. It has also been suggested that it may have belonged to a sphinx rather than a human figure, because the hairstyle is strongly reminiscent of Eastern styles. The model was found in the “Fill of the Drain”, very close to the Great East Hall of the palace of Knossos. This great hall, one of the reception chambers of the palace, was decorated with frescoes depicting religious imagery in which human figures predominated.
