Description
Clay model of a building, a ritual object. This three-dimensional composition represents a circular building with an enclosure delimited by horns of consecration and a dove. It has an doorway with a threshold in which a figure stands. A female figure is seated at a low table, perhaps kneading bread, while opposite her only the lower legs of a third figure are preserved. The presence of the bird and the horns of consecration indicates that the scene has a transcendental religious significance. The model was found in a room next to the entrance of the tholos tomb of Kamilari in the Mesara, together with another three clay models which may have been used in rituals. The tomb was used for many successive burials from the Protopalatial period (1800 BC) to the beginning of the Postpalatial period (1300 BC). It has produced abundant pottery attesting to communal wine-drinking and eating rituals during the funerary feasts held in the early Neopalatial period.
