Description
Standing female figurine with hollow bell-shaped skirt. The preserved hand is placed on the figure’s hip and it seems likely that the other one was making the same gesture, unique in Minoan iconography. The figurine belongs to a group of approximately ten figurines found in a room of the “Villa” at Kannia in Gortyn. It dates from the Late Minoan IB phase of use of the villa, which was reused in Late Minoan IIIB. Both the excavation data and the stylistic features of the figurine indicate that it is dated to the end of Late Minoan IB. The simple rendering of the face with the strongly protruding nose and chin, incised mouth and large ears, long, stiff locks of hair and cylindrical skirt are typical features of figurines of this period.
