Cemeteries of Phaistos
Description
Clay closed vessel (alabastron) from a burial assemblage from Kalyvia in Phaistos. Decorated with motifs in brown paint on a light ground. An exceptional example from a workshop operating in the wider Phaistos area, whose works accompanied burials in various cemeteries (e.g. Kalyvia, Kamilari). In the Late Minoan IIIA period, which covers the 14th century BC, vase decoration was drawn from Minoan tradition and Mycenaean models. This vase is decorated with a scene of two stylised birds facing each other with a stylised iris flower in the centre, while the background is filled with flowers, zigzag patterns and other motifs. The winged body of the birds is rendered with bands filled with lines, while the head and neck are solid except for the eye.
