Description
Hollow model of a fish, painted brownish-black. It may represent a grouper. The model was probably a votive offering made by a fisherman who visited the sanctuary of Traostalos. Other similar objects have been found at the sanctuary, material attestations of fishermen’s prayers for a good catch. Fish were a valuable Minoan food, as we know from the remains found in settlements and also in sanctuaries preserving evidence of ceremonial feasts. The world of the sea is represented at the sanctuary of Traostalos, which is located approximately in the centre of the east coast of Crete, north of the important settlement and palace of Kato Zakros.
