Description
This stone jug from Mochlos is one of the largest and most beautiful stone vases of Minoan Crete, reflecting the high level of stone-carving skill at the time. It was found in Tomb VI of Tomb Complex IV/V/VI. The particularly elegant and harmonious shape of the vase is highlighted by the artisan’s skilled use of the stone, with the wide, light-coloured vein running horizontally, just above the widest part of the body. This type of coloured stone is often used for stone vases at Mochlos but rarely in other parts of the island. It was mainly used from Early Minoan IIB to Middle Minoan I.
