Description
Miniature cylindrical stone vase that tapers upwards and preserves its lid. Its shape is unique. It is made of green-black steatite of excellent quality, polished to a high lustre. The vase was found in Tomb II of Tomb Complex Ι/ΙΙ/ΙΙΙ at Mochlos, the richest tomb in the cemetery, which contained numerous exquisitely-made small stone vessels among other valuable grave goods. Its miniature size is typical of many stone vessels of Early Minoan II – Middle Minoan I date, in contrast to the larger examples of the preceding period. Hundreds of stone vases have been found in tombs of Prepalatial Crete, and they appear to have been intended chiefly for funerary use during this period.
