Description
Canaanite amphora from House X of Kommos, made of clay fabric from southern Canaan. It has a pointed body ending in a curved narrow base, angular shoulders, vertical handles and a short neck with relief collar. Traces of decoration of reddish-brown intersecting lines are visible. It was probably imported to the harbour of Kommos together with similar amphorae for its valuable contents, wine or resin from Syro-Palestine. The excavators argue that the contents of such vessels were transferred to smaller locally made amphorae for transport to the interior of Crete. Imports to Kommos peaked between 1375 and 1200 BC.
