Description
Stone ladle (miniature bowl) with Linear A inscription around the rim. Although the script has not been deciphered, the inscription on the ladle is comparable to others found on stone offering tables. It is probably a “libation formula”, a conventional invocation found in several variants. Miniature vessels of this type, like the larger ones on which they are modelled, were probably used to offer precious liquids. This inscribed artefact comes from an assemblage of votive offerings found at Troullos, Archanes, clearly indicating its owner’s desire to engage in competitive display through the inscription, which may include a name. Paint has been added to it to make it stand out more clearly from the white ground.
