Description
Clay model of a four-wheeled cart found on a small height east of the Minoan town of Palaikastro. It is a solid brownish-black with white details. The open cart would have been wooden, as were its wheels, which were probably solid. The groups of vertical white lines between double horizontal lines may represent the bars of the cart. It would have been drawn by draught animals, perhaps oxen. The cart model shows that there were Minoan roads suitable for such vehicles, which would mainly have been used to transport various goods and products. Such roads were probably found in and around large towns and ports such as Palaikastro.
