Description
Jug with biconical body, vertical handle and elongated spout, decorated with white motifs on a brownish-black ground. These Early Minoan vessels are conventionally named teapots due to their shape, which resembles that of modern teapots. The teapot, especially that with a pronounced spout, is one of the most characteristic pottery shapes of Early Minoan IIB, also continuing into the following period. This jug from Vasiliki was found in the Red House. The Red House and the eight-metre-deep well cut into the bedrock in Room 39 were used in Early Minoan II. In the following period, the well fell into disuse and was filled with rubbish from the Early Minoan III – Middle Minoan IA settlement, including this teapot.
