Description
Silver cylinder seal made in Syria in the first half of the 3rd millennium BC. The sealing surface depicts a standing human figure being pursued by two animals, probably a lion and a horned animal, both upright. Metal seals were rare in antiquity and few of those found come from excavations, making this early Syrian seal from Mochlos an exceptionally important find. It was discovered in Room I of Tomb Complex Ι/ΙΙ/ΙΙΙ and is associated with objects dated to Early Minoan II-III. It seems that the silver cylinder seal was used by an inhabitant of Mochlos soon after being made in Syria. The seal is one of numerous finds from the cemetery indicating that the coastal community that flourished on Mochlos had contacts with parts of the Near East as early as the Early Minoan period.
