Description
Bronze rectangular sheet that formed the lid of a pyxis or a small casket. It has four holes that would have been used to attach it to the missing part of the container. An exquisite piece of bronzework, probably made of imported copper which was stored in the West Wing of the palace of Zakros in the form of oxhide ingots. The lid bears repouss? decoration of papyrus leaves with tendrils and double garlands in the four corners. This is a theme frequently seen on vases of the same period, indicating that metalsmiths and vase-painters drew inspiration from common sources.
