Description
Necklace of 39 wheat-grain and drop-shaped beads. The gold beads were made by hammering over a mould, a technique that facilitated standardisation and increased production. This is evident from the discovery of identical gold beads and similar necklaces in different regions. This necklace formed part of a rich assemblage from the “Tomba degli Ori”, the “Tomb of the Gold Ornaments” in the cemetery of Agia Triada. However, it has been argued that this assemblage, together with a scarab of Queen Tiyi, the wife of Pharaoh Amenhotep III, and other luxury items accompanying human bones in secondary burial, may have been transferred there from the nearby tomb containing the painted Agia Triada Sarcophagus, which was otherwise empty when it was discovered.
