Description
The jug is one of the most common vessels for serving and pouring wine in Hellenistic Crete. It is thought to have been produced by the Knossos pottery workshop. This example has a typical oval, deep and very open shape reminiscent of a tulip flower, whence its conventional name of “tulip jug”. It is covered with black glaze and decorated under the rim with an incised wavy branch of ivy leaves and flowers in the West Slope Style.
