Description
This jug has a rounded biconical body and flaring rim. It is covered with glossy black glaze and decorated with incised pentagons in the West Slope Style. This is a typical product of the Knossos pottery workshop. West Slope ware is one of the most widespread pottery styles of the Hellenistic period, particularly in the East Mediterranean. It is named after the West Slope of the Athens Acropolis, where such vessels were first found during the excavations of the German Archaeological Institute in the late 19th century. The style features motifs rendered in incised decoration, clay wash, and white and red paint.
