Description
Stone lamp with a lotus-shaped bowl and lotus-leaf decoration in high relief on the upper part of the foot. The production of luxury vessels and other items was especially highly developed in the organised workshop complexes that operated in the palaces of Knossos, Phaistos and Zakros, the harbours of Poros and Kommos, and urban centres such as Mochlos and Gournia. This particular vessel was made of porphyry (antico rosso), which was quarried in the Mani and Egypt. It is more likely that the raw material was imported from the Peloponnese, although the shape and decoration are in the Egyptian style.
