Description
Only the upper part of this female statue is preserved. It is made of limestone, like many of the works of early Cretan sculpture carved in the round, at a time when Cretan artists were creating the earliest monumental sculptures in Greece. The figure, probably an enthroned goddess or a seated woman, is depicted frontally. She has the typical "Daedalic" hairstyle, resembling a wig. She is wearing a chiton (tunic) decorated with horizontal bands of relief rosettes and a mantle over the shoulders. Her face is modelled in the "Daedalic" style of the period, with strongly stressed eyes, nose and lips.
