Description
Rectangular stele with elaborate top (band, cymatium and relief band) and base (cymatium and band). The main body has a 26-line inscription containing a proxeny decree by the Itanians in honour of Patroklos of Macedon, sent as general to Crete by the King of Egypt, Ptolemy II Philadelphus (285-246 BC). 1   θ ε ό ς     vacat 2 κόσμου γνώμα. ἔδοξε Ἰτανίων τᾶι βουλᾶι καὶ τᾶι ἐκκλησίαι· ἐπειδὴ Πάτροκλος Πάτρωνος 5 Μακεδὼν ἀποσταλεὶς ὑπὸ βασιλέος Πτολεμαίου στρα- ταγὸς ἐς Κρήταν ἀνὴρ ἀγαθὸς καὶ δίκαιος ἐγένετο περὶ τὰν τῶν Ἰτανίων πόλ̣ιν καὶ πολλὰ 10 συνήργησε τοῖς Ἰτανίοις ὅπως τά τε κατὰ τὰν πόλιν ἀσ- φαλέως ἔχηι πολιτευομένων τῶν Ἰτανίων κατὰ τοὺς [ν]όμους καὶ τὰν χώραν μετὰ πάσας 15 ἀσφαλείας νέμων[τα]ι, δεδό- χθαι τοῖς Ἰτανίοις ποιή[σ]ασ- θαι αὐτὸν πρόξενόν τε καὶ εὐ- εργέταν καὶ πολίταν καὶ αὐ- τὸν καὶ ἐγγόνος μετέχοντας 20 καὶ θίνων καὶ ἀνθρωπίνων πάντων. τὰν δὲ γνώμαν τάνδε τοὶ κοσμητῆρες τοὶ σὺν Αἴγωνι ἐς στάλας λιθί- νας ἀγγράψαντες θέντω ἐς 25 τὸ ἱαρὸν τᾶς Ἀθάνας καὶ τοῦ Ἀσκλαπιοῦ. Translation: God. By decree of the kosmoi. The Boule and the Ecclesia of Itanos decided the following: because Patroklos, son of Patron, from Macedonia, sent by King Ptolemy as a general to Crete, conducted himself honourably and justly towards the city of the Itanians, and contributed decisively so that the city itself was securely governed according to the laws and ruled its territory in the same way, the Itanians decided to name him proxenos and euergetes and citizen, both himself and his descendants, equal participants in the religious and civil affairs of the city. This decree having been inscribed on a stone stele by the kosmoi, led by Aegon, they are to erect it in the sanctuary of Athena and Asklepios.
