Description
Burial coin hoard consisting of four denarii of the Roman emperors Vespasian (69-79 AD), Domitian (as Caesar in 69-81 and Augustus in 81-96 AD) and Trajan (97-118 AD). This is an unusual case in Roman Crete of a group of coins intended as the generous fee for Charon to ferry the deceased to the Underworld. Another find from the same tomb, a gold ring (Χ-Α 586), is also of a numismatic nature. Its sealstone depicts Hermes Kerdoos (the Profit-Bringer), the patron of commerce, holding a full coin purse. The final item of the exceptional and luxurious grave goods is the large, intact glass vessel (Υ 149) exhibited together with the coins and the ring.
