Palace of Zakros. The Treasury of the Shrine
Description
Limestone chalice with horizontal grooves. It is one of four cups of the same type found in the Treasury of the Shrine of the palace of Zakros. Chalices were cult vessels, also seen in the later Camp-Stool Fresco depicting banqueting scenes, which probably adorned a room on the second floor of the West Wing of the palace of Knossos. The particular features of the stone and its working by highly trained stone-carvers of the Minoan workshops have produced a beautiful aesthetic result.
