Description
Black-glazed kantharos with rich decoration in three zones. In the first and second, the body of the vessel is adorned with rows of floral motifs and ivy-leaf bands in white paint and clay wash, ornaments typical of West Slope Ware. The third decorative zone is formed of relief palmette petals. This part of the vessel was probably made separately in a mould and joined to the rest of the body before firing. This is a rare and very distinctive type of kantharos, its shape and decoration imitating metal prototypes, probably deliberately. It is probably the product of a Cretan workshop.
