Description
Stone lamp with a band of relief leaves around the rim and a relief band around the outside of the spouts in which the wicks were placed. Found in the Treasury of the Shrine of the palace of Zakros. A more elaborate version of the common clay lamp, it was displayed as a prestige item. Minoan artisans used a wide variety of stones, local and imported, soft and hard. This particular vessel was made of porphyry (antico rosso), probably imported from the Mani or Egypt.
