Description
Terracotta enthroned female figurine. She is wearing a long peplos which hangs straight with few pleats, except for the apoptygma overfold at the waist. On her head is a low polos headdress, while her long hair falls on her shoulders and back in wavy locks. The throne on which she sits is particularly tall and wide. The seated woman motif began to become very popular in ancient Greek art in the Archaic period. Examples of the type have been preserved both in numerous small figurines and in large sculpture, even from architectural monuments. It is unclear whether this example represents a goddess or a mortal. It was found with many other small clay figurines deposited as votive offerings at The Sanctuary of Demeter at Knossos. This type of figurine was quite widespread throughout Greece.
