Description
Bronze figurine of Hermes in chiton, cloak and broad-brimmed petasos traveller’s hat. Pairs of wings spring from his feet, while his right hand is extended forward. It probably held the caduceus or a bowl, attributes of the god. The cloak, petasos and winged feet indicate the common aspect of Hermes the wayfarer, god of travellers and merchants. The short chiton and youthful aspect of the figurine refer to the type of Hermes as a young man, the protector of ephebes. These attributes and the association of Hermes with adolescent rites of passage are key elements of his cult at Syme.
