Description
Small bronze tripod stand used to support a cauldron. Such tripods have been found in many parts of the East Mediterranean and are thought to originate from Cyprus. Various local imitations have also come to light. The legs are made of simple rods, with smaller rods used as decoration and to provide further support. This example has a large, solid central ring with two bands at top and bottom, while the legs terminate in bovid hooves and rise to two scrolls reminiscent of Ionic column capitals. These objects were often used in funerary, oracular, cult and other rituals, and their discovery in a tomb is indicative of their function.
