Description
Bronze agrimi figurine. The body is relatively stylised, while the head and hooves are rendered in detail. The surface is quite rough from casting. The wild goat stands on a rectangular base, its rudimentary tail lowered and its horns curved sharply back. Similar votive animal figurines have been found at many sanctuaries in Greece. The specific species of animal offered often changes over time, depending on contemporary preferences and sanctuary rituals. In Crete such figurines are commonly found in sacred caves. The animals are probably gifts presented by the worshipper to the god of the cave, seeking to ensure his favour for himself and his herd.
