Description
Marble exaleiptron consisting of three pieces (base, tall foot and semi-globular body) joined together, and a separate lid with an elaborate handle. An elegant and luxurious version of the humbler clay vases of the same shape, it was intended for storing liquids, unguents or cosmetic powders for women’s personal care. Examples from Crete are only found at Knossos, Chersonissos and the region of the Koinon of the Oreioi in the southwest corner of the island, indicating that they were selectively imported, presumably in line with local burial customs.Bibliography:
