Description
Limestone Syrian-type anchor indicating the commercial activity of Kommos, the seaport of Phaistos and Agia Triada. This is a very important find, as composite anchors of this type have only been found at the port of Ugarit (Ras Shamra) in North Syria. It is an almost triangular slab with a probably deliberately rounded top and base, with three roughly circular holes, probably made with a chisel. Found reused in the large Building P of the harbour of Kommos, together with another example. Building P consists of six parallel elongated galleries, 40 metres long, which were probably shipsheds for storing seagoing ships at a distance from the shore in the winter months. It also contained numerous local storage vessels for the mass export of commodities. Taken together with other vessels for transporting goods imported from Egypt, Syro-Palestine and Cyprus, they attest to the commercial relations of Crete with the East Mediterranean during the Final Palatial period.
