Description
Head of a clay female figurine with a broad, disc-shaped headdress, over which the long locks of hair are braided. The face is modelled by pinching the clay, forming round cheeks, a chin and a prominent nose. The eyes are indicated by applied discs and the ears by wheat-shaped attachments. The hairstyle is elaborate, while the broad, disc-shaped headdress accentuates the length of the hair and the plaited braids. Looplike curls, protruding from under the hat brim, fall over the forehead. The wide upper surface of the hat and the narrow side of the brim are covered with a pair of twisted braids. The hat and hair bear traces of brown paint. The imposing headdress and the highlighting of the elaborate coiffure are typical of the human figurines, particularly female ones, found at Cretan Peak Sanctuaries of the Late Protopalatial period, and signal attempts to display the social status and perhaps even the social identity of the person depicted. A particular focus on hairstyle is observed at the neighbouring sanctuaries of Philioremos and Pyrgos Tylissos.
