Description
Pedestal of porphyry lamp with elaborate relief decoration of ivy leaves, a characteristic motif of the Neopalatial period. The vast majority of Neopalatial stone vessels were made of serpentinite, although there are many examples made of other imported stones such as porphyry or lapis lacedaemonius from the Peloponnese. Stone vessels were larger than in the preceding period, indicating production on a larger scale and the attribution of value to sizeable objects. Many of these would have been heirlooms passed down through the generations.
