Description
Ovoid rhyton with decoration of dolphins against a lattice pattern, perhaps representing the sea, in black on a buff slip. The rhyton is in the Marine Style of the Special Palatial Tradition typical of Late Minoan IB. It has a tall neck with a thick relief ring around the base, a flat flaring rim, a small vertical handle and a hole in the conical tip for pouring libations. The vessel was found in Building BQ in the Minoan town of Pseira, together with other fine vases (mainly rhyta) in the Special Palatial Tradition of Knossian origin (such as the Late Minoan IB basket-shaped vessel ΑΜΗ Π5407 and the pyxis-shaped vessel ΑΜΗ Π5406), which were stored for use in a ceremony or procession.
