Description
Ovoid rhyton with decoration of two octopuses covering the surface of the vase, against a lattice pattern, perhaps indicating the sea, in black on a buff slip. The rhyton is in the Marine Style of the Special Palatial Tradition typical of the Late Minoan IB period. It has a tall neck with a thick relief ring around the base, a flat flaring rim, a small vertical handle and a hole in the conical tip for pouring libations. It was found in Room 4 of Block Delta of the Minoan town of Palaikastro, where it was probably stored with other similar libation vessels, ovoid and conical rhyta, for use in a ceremony or procession.
