Description
This vessel from Malia is a refined version of the utensil conventionally termed a fruit-stand. It consists of a shallow bowl with a handle on the rim, supported on three tall strap legs with curved ends. The white-on-dark decoration is a plain variation of the Kamares Style, with fine curved lines and small stylised floral motifs, lacking the intensity of the polychrome whirls typical of the period. The form is typical of the ceramic production of the palatial centre of Malia, and appears to have been used to offer food at banquets and ceremonies held at the palace and in the houses of the town.
