The world of nature
Description
The large landscape scene from the House of the Frescoes includes fragments depicting a jet of water, rendered as a solid blue vertical band with scattered blue droplets on either side. The restoration by Gilliéron fils, as published by Evans, was revised in the 1960s by the painter Thomas Fanourakis, who was involved in the artistic restoration of several Minoan frescoes, and A. Caravella, a conservator of the Conservation Institute in Rome. However, many different views have been put forward since then regarding the nature of this jet of water. Arthur Evans argued that it sprang from an artificial fountain, while later and contemporary scholars believe it to be a waterfall or a stream rushing down from a height.
