Description
Large terracotta figurine of the goddess Athena, depicted frontally and wearing a helmet. She originally held a spear and sword which have not been preserved, in the type of Athena Promachos, a well-known statue type in Attica in the 6th and especially the 5th c. BC. This is an early example of the type, as we see from the facial features, the stiff pose and the cylindrical lower body. Other figurines of the goddess were found in the same area of the sanctuary of the Acropolis of Gortyn, which was dedicated to Athena.
