Description
This mosaic floor is made of multicoloured stone tesserae with details in coloured glass. The mosaic is framed by a braided guilloche motif delimiting four octagons, creating a lozenge in the centre and triangles in the corners and halfway down the sides. Each octagon, delimited by a double line of black tesserae, contains concentric circles decorated with a running spiral in the top pair of panels and a double band with diagonal lines in the lower pair. Within the circles are various birds: doves with pomegranates, fighting roosters, sparrows with pomegranates, and parrots drinking water from a kantharos. The beautifully executed composition is reminiscent of iconographic models from Pompeii.
