Description
Clay female equestrian figurine. The “Riding Goddess” is depicted frontally, almost upright on the saddle, with her right hand on the horse’s head. The rendition of the figure is typical of the period, with applied spheres for eyes and a triangular body. The horse is shaped in a similar geometric style. The clothing of the figure and the harness are rendered with wide black bands. The type of the “Riding Goddess” was widespread throughout the East Mediterranean from the Mycenaean period onwards. It is believed to represent a nature goddess with fertility attributes, such as Artemis or Eileithyia.
