Description
Terracotta plaque with Gorgoneion (Medusa head). The eyes, eyebrows, cheeks and pointed beard are indicated by incised outlines, highlighted in black and brown. The hair is arranged in stylised curls. The Gorgoneion, an apotropaic symbol, often appears on votive plaques in sanctuaries of the Archaic period. It corresponds to the Eastern god Kumbaba or Humbaba, with whom it shares stylistic features.
