Description
Lekythos with chariot and charioteer, flanked by hoplites. Chariot races were a very popular subject in ancient Greek art. They were associated with the mythic past of the Greeks and with the gods of Olympus, while their patron deity was Poseidon Hippios. Chariot races were run with horses, mules and even foals. The winner was not the charioteer but the owner of the horses, so this was the only sport that women could win, as they were not allowed to participate in other athletic activities.
