Description
Relief of Demeter seated on the Mirthless Rock. This is the stone on which the goddess sat to rest, tired from her futile search for her daughter Persephone, who had been abducted by Hades, the god of the Underworld. Her head is supported on her right hand, elbow on the right knee, while in her left hand she holds a cornucopia of wheat and fruit. She is wearing a long chiton and a himation covering her head. Her wavy hair is parted in the centre.
