Description
Selected representative coins of the Roman period in Crete are a “provincial” coin of the Cretan Koinon and a typical Imperial state coin issued by the mint of Rome. Examples of both groups circulated throughout the period, in varying numbers at different times. 1. Bronze issue of the Cretan Koinon in the name of Trajan (115 AD). Obverse: wreathed head of the emperor. Inscription ΑΥΤΟΚΡΑΤωΡ [ΑΥΓ ΤΡΑΙΑΝΟϹ ΓΕΡ] ΔΑΚΙ. Reverse: enthroned Cybele holding bowl and sceptre and leaning on a tympanum, with two lions at her feet. Inscription ΚΟΙΝΟΝ ΚΡΗΤ[ωΝ]. 2. Antonianus of Philip I dated 248 AD, celebrating the millennium of Rome. Obverse: bust of the emperor with radiate crown. Inscription IMP PHILIPPUS AUG. Reverse: façade of six-columned temple containing a statue of the goddess Roma. Inscription SAECULUM NOVUM.
